This month, we are recognizing our team in Raleigh, NC, for their outstanding work during the cleanup of an aluminum phosphide release!
Aluminum phosphide is a fumigant that releases phosphine gas when exposed to moisture. This gas is highly toxic to both humans and the environment. Phosphine gas can cause a variety of health issues because it disrupts the body’s ability to utilize oxygen at the cellular level. Due to its gaseous properties, phosphine can migrate off-site if not properly addressed, potentially impacting air, water, and soil quality.
Upon arrival, the team assessed the scope of work and quickly realized the project was larger than initially anticipated. After conducting a safety meeting and donning the appropriate PPE, the crew got to work. Over the course of several days, they repeatedly visited the site to test impacted boxes using pH meters, remove leaking canisters, package waste into drums, and clean affected areas throughout the warehouse.
Despite extreme heat and project delays, the crew remained dedicated to completing the job safely and effectively. After approximately two weeks of diligent work, the project was successfully completed.
Congratulations to the Raleigh crew and the additional support staff from our Winston-Salem, NC; Richmond, VA; Stafford, VA; and Fayetteville, NC offices for their teamwork and commitment to a job well done!
