This month, we are highlighting our Richmond, VA team for their work on a large-scale wastewater tunnel cleanup.
The project took place in an underground tunnel basin at a wastewater treatment facility, making the work especially complex. Crews were tasked with removing water and debris under challenging confined-space conditions. Incidents like this can impact drinking water and air quality while also contributing to nutrient pollution, oxygen depletion, and harm to wildlife.
The crew mobilized to the site, conducted a safety meeting, donned the appropriate PPE, and began atmospheric testing. Once the water levels dropped to a safe level, the team made its first confined-space entry and began vacuuming and removing debris while continuing air monitoring and maintaining the sump pumps.
Despite equipment challenges and changing site conditions, the team remained focused on safety and relied on strong problem-solving skills to keep the project moving.
