First Call Environmental was requested to respond to a release of Methylene diphenyl isocyanate or MDI. MDI is used primarily in the manufacturing of urethane and foams. It is a hazardous material and can irritate skin as well as the respiratory tract.
The team was dispatched for a small amount of material needing cleaned up in a containment pit. After setting up a decontamination area, the team donned Level B protection providing the much needed protection of skin as well as supplied breathing air. A hazardous location ventilation fan was installed in the area to reduce the odor and provide engineering controls to the facility.
Upon initial inspection, it was determined that the release was larger than initially reported. The crew made several entries in order to remove the product and clean the impacted area. Once completed, the decontamination station was used and the crews departed from another project completed safely and effectively.
