This month’s Project Spotlight highlights our Macon, GA team and their outstanding work completing a challenging wastewater cleanup in the crawlspace beneath a facility.

Management was initially informed that the project involved the aftermath of a long-term plumbing leak that allowed wastewater from the facility’s floor drain system to seep into the crawlspace. Although the plumbing had recently been repaired, prolonged exposure to moisture had saturated the soil, created standing water, damaged insulation, and produced conditions favorable for mold growth.

Extended moisture and wastewater exposure can create a variety of environmental concerns, including material deterioration, pest attraction, potential groundwater impacts, and mold growth. These conditions can also present health concerns, such as respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and risks associated with dermal exposure.

Upon arrival, the Macon crew conducted a safety tailgate meeting, donned the appropriate PPE, and began removing impacted soil, standing water, and debris from the crawlspace. Throughout the project, the team continuously monitored atmospheric conditions, confirming safe oxygen levels and no detectable volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

During cleanup operations, the crew discovered an additional plumbing leak, allowing the customer to begin the repair process immediately and prevent further impact. Environmental sampling, including air, surface, and soil samples, was also performed to evaluate microbial conditions throughout the affected area.

As work progressed, additional damaged insulation was removed, a mold assessment was completed, and dehumidification efforts were implemented to help control moisture. The crew also utilized vacuum excavation to safely remove excess liquid and impacted material from the crawlspace.

From identifying an additional leak to addressing wastewater, impacted soil, damaged insulation, and potential mold concerns, the Macon team demonstrated thoroughness and attention to safety throughout the entire project.
