First Call Columbia, SC was called to assist with an overturned tank truck on a busy South Carolina Interstate. Upon arrival, First Call Environmentals tank truck specialists met with the incident command team as well as our customer’s representative. Due to the heavily traveled roadway that was not shut down, State DOT representatives were eager for a fast removal of the truck from the lane of travel. A plan was made for uprighting and off loading as well as cleaning of the roadway. The tanker was a DOT 412 spec and was hauling sulfuric acid. The tanker was on its side in the lane of travel. Due to the construction of these tanks, there was sufficient structural integrity for the recovery personnel to safely upright the tanker. Some of the product that had been released onto the roadway would require a neutralization process.
Once the tanker was uprighted and moved to the side of the roadway, First Call worked with the on site agencies and the customer to safely transfer the product to an empty tanker while decontamination of the roadway was in progress. Once cleaned, lanes of travel were opened up and the scene was cleared.
